I recently sought out a series of public forums, where readers were asked what one piece of advice they received that has remained with them since. It was for both selfish and selfless reasons, because any of us have the potential to benefit from the lifechanging advice provided to others.

Below are the results along with a little context:

An empathetic boss said, “You can’t change who people are but you can change how you react to them.”

A career mentor said, “When you don’t know what to do, do what you know.”

An older relative said, “If you always tell the truth, you don’t have to remember what you said.”

A new manger said, “My job is to train you to take my job.”

Following a tracheostomy, a grandfather said, “Your mind will kill you faster than your body ever will.”
