Signs You’re Moving Away From Your True Self

And how to correct it…

As a fan of Brené Brown, I have a habit of notating my favorite pieces of advice offered during her interviews. There is one in particular that has stuck with me for years and crosses my mind daily.

“If it’s uncomfortable, it’s growth. If it’s painful, it’s a betrayal of self.”

For those that aren’t familiar, Brené Brown has dedicated the past 20 years of her life to researching vulnerability, courage, shame, and empathy. As an individual, she has managed to identify 87 different human emotions — offering the unique opportunity to effectively communicate what we might be feeling at a given moment.

As humans, we oftentimes experience feelings of being overwhelmed simply due to not knowing how to process, compute, and articulate an emotion that so many of us experience. It’s the reason for temper tantrums in children; They simply don’t have the vocabulary at their current stage of life to let the adults around them know what’s going on internally. For a good portion of history, adults empathized with a similar struggle, despite a broadened vocabulary.

We know how to communicate an event, but not the impact it had on us at a visceral level, which is what makes Brené’s work so impactful.
